LEI – Lithuanian Energy Institute
Presentation
The Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI) is a state scientific research organisation with about 300 employees. LEI carries out fundamental and applied research in various fields related to decommissioning, radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel (SNF) management, safety and environmental impact assessment of nuclear facilities, heat transfer, hydro and gas dynamics, alternative energy sources, materials science. LEI laboratories are participating in a broad range of international programmes (COST, EUREKA, FP5, FP6, FP7, H2020, IAEA, Phare, etc.). Since 1994, the LEI has been actively involved in the analysis of the decommissioning and radioactive waste management problems at Ignalina NPP.
Role in the Project
LEI will provide information concerning Lithuanian regulation, specific needs of stakeholders (and share knowledge about RBMK graphite, including radiological characterisation of graphite, concrete and metallic structures. Sampling of reactor zone R3 components at Ignalina NPP Unit 1 has been already performed and samples were radiologically characterised. Therefore, having the results of experimental characterisation of the taken samples, LEI will develop numerical models for the estimation of the induced activities in the analysed components and evaluate their spatial distribution. LEI will participate in consideration of safety issues, dismantling scenarios and 3D modelling of removal of the irradiated graphite, and it will also provide support and analysis for waste optimization issues. LEI will also contribute to dissemination, communication, exploitation, and training activities.
