CIRTEN-POLIMI – Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per la Ricerca Tecnologica Nucleare – Politecnico Di Milano
Presentation
CIRTEN is the Consortium of the Italian Universities involved in nuclear science and technology research activities. CIRTEN was founded in 1994, joining the competences and the history of Universities active in the nuclear engineering area since the early ’50s (Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Univ. of Pisa, Univ. of Bologna, Univ. of Palermo, Univ. of Rome “La Sapienza”, Univ. of Padova). The Consortium contributes to research and development (R&D) and education and training (E&T) projects, by organising and managing Groups of Experts, created among the professors and the senior and young researchers of the Member Universities.
The main R&D areas addressed by CIRTEN are: Gen-III and Gen-IV nuclear reactors – including SMRs, safety and risk analysis, innovative fuel and fuel cycle solutions, radiation protection, nuclear instrumentation and measurements, decommissioning and waste management, medical applications of radiation, fusion reactor physics and engineering.
CIRTEN is the largest Italian university for Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design and it is ranked as one of the most outstanding universities in Engineering field (#24 in QS World University Ranking). CIRTEN-POLIMI is one of the few universities in Europe that possesses modern and complete equipment for developing R&D solutions for several innovative applications of nuclear engineering and ionizing radiations.
Since 2016, CIRTEN has been involved in the IAEA collaborative research project called GRAPA (irradiated GRAphite Processing Approaches) via Politecnico di Milano, where it mainly contributes in the physico-chemical-mechanical-radiological characterisation of virgin and irradiated graphite.
Role in the Project
The role of CIRTEN, through the participation of Politecnico di Milano (CIRTEN-POLIMI), is to supply physical-mechanical-radiological data relative to the reactor L-54M, to investigate and test a coating painting for safer disposal/storage of i-graphite, to develop a test bench for bulk-oxidation risk assessment, to share the costing methods used during previous L-54M cost assessment, and to prepare scientific publication in high ranked journals.
